Science without Borders

Graduate application procedures

Applying through CALDO

Students applying through CALDO must follow the procedures.
Visit for eligibility requirements & further details.

1. Select your program/Department

a) Search for your Faculty of Science program on your own.
A list of available supervisors, programs and projects that match the priority areas are available on our site. Graduate focus areas and Post Doctoral areas.

b) If you don’t know what university you want to attend then use CALDOs pre-screening service
i) Complete the online graduate pre-admission application form on the CALDO website. (The form assists CALDO in finding a suitable graduate research program from all four universities. This is not a formal application & admission is not guaranteed.)

ii) Scan and upload the required documents as part of your application. See the CALDO graduate page for the complete list.

iii) Once you have provided the pre-application and documents, the central CALDO office will consult with the four CALDO universities to determine the best match. This process normally takes approximately one week.

iv) You will then be contacted by the CALDO office regarding study options and advised if you should apply for formal admission to a CALDO institution.

2. Apply to the University of Alberta
Our online application is available at

Application requirements and deadlines for graduate programs vary by program and department. We recommend applying early, often 6-12 months before you plan to attend.
3. Apply for the scholarship
Students interested in full PhD, partial “sandwich” PhD and postdoctoral fellowships are responsible for their own application to CNPq or CAPES for the Science without Borders scholarship and must meet their deadlines.

This may be done at the same time as applying to CALDO.  See their website for dates.
