Statement on Student Art Exhibit + Vandalism

On May 8, the University of Alberta became aware that an interactive student art piece on display in a temporary exhibit on campus had been vandalized with hate speech in the form of text and symbolism, including a swastika. In consultation with the artist, the university took immediate action. The artist removed the hate speech, and the university has put measures in place to guard against any future potential vandalism.

There is no room for hate at the University of Alberta. The university opposes any discrimination or hatred on the basis of religion, race, ethnicity, national origin, and other protected categories. All U of A spaces must respect the university’s Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy, as well as the university’s Statement on Free Expression.

It is unclear when the hate speech was added. The nature of the art piece is that it is interactive — it invites passersby to share their thoughts by writing on a section of the art installation. The piece is part of a temporary art exhibition that includes a number of student works and ends on May 12. The artist’s views and opinions do not represent those of the university.

University of Alberta community members do not have to navigate difficult situations by themselves. Resources are available to support your safety, health and well-being.
