Edmonton foodie and UAlberta Faculty of Arts alumna Leanne Brown is helping low-income households put nutritious and delicious meals on their tables with an innovative new cookbook.

Leanne Brown ('07 BA) came up with the idea for GOOD AND CHEAP: EAT WELL ON $4/DAY (Workman; July 14, 2015; $16.95) while pursuing a food studies degree at New York University. Brown researched what it was like to live on food stamps, and designed the cookbook for people surviving on the $4-a-day food-stamp allowance in the United States.

But, Brown says the helpful recipe guide - which was officially be released Tuesday, July 14, 2015 - can be used by anyone, in any city, whether they're living below the poverty line or struggling to feed a large family.

"I wrote this book to show that cooking, not budget is the key to great food," says Brown. "I strove to create recipes that use money carefully, without being purely slavish to the bottom line."

Brown initially launched GOOD AND CHEAP as a free download online and started a small Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise $10,000 to self-publish and fund a buy one/donate one model. Thousands of people watched her video and contributed a total of $145,000. Since then, Brown has donated 9,000 copies to the public and plans to make 20,000 copies of the book available to non-profits for $4 each.

Brown is currently touring North America, and this event is the first time she'll unveil her cookbook in her hometown.

Brown will continue offering a free download of the book on her website and for every hard copy of the book purchased, another will be given to a needy community member or family - free of charge.
