Faculty Terms of Reference

Faculty of Science Award for Excellent Teaching 
Field: This award recognizes the commitment by its academic staff to high standards in teaching, and is given to recognize outstanding teaching and the key role it plays in allowing the Faculty to attract and develop excellent students.
Value: $2000 and a certificate
Criteria: Nominees for the Faculty of Science Award for Excellent Teaching must have held a full time Faculty appointment in the Faculty of Science at this University for at least five years prior to nomination. Temporary academic staff (Sessionals) with at least three years teaching experience, who have taught at least 18 credits of coursework, are also eligible for this award. Previous winners of the award are excluded from further competition.

Faculty of Science Innovation in Teaching Award

Field: This award recognizes creative contributions to the development of tools for the innovative presentation of coursework, new curriculum design, and the creation of an improved teaching and learning environment.
Value: $2000 and a certificate (Prize may be spent in any of the categories acceptable under NSERC guidelines for research grants or under the guidelines of the University’s Professional Expense Claim. Should a recipient wish to use their funds for philanthropic purposes, ie to establish a new or support an existing student award, the Dean’s Office must be notified in order that the funds may be dispersed in a manner that will make this possible).
Criteria: Nominees for the Innovation in Teaching Award must have been employees of the Faculty of Science at the time of the contribution. Previous nominations can be resubmitted, but previous winners of the award are excluded from further competition.

Kathleen W. Klawe Prize in Excellence in Teaching of Large Classes 
Field: This award was created by Dr. Maria Klawe in memory of her mother who taught very large classes in economics at the U of A in the 60s and 70s. The prize recognizes excellence in the teaching of large classes. It is awarded in alternate years between the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science. This year it will be awarded to the Faculty of Arts.
Value: $1000
