6.24 Audits

All registered graduate students except Special Graduate students may seek permission to audit a course. Since permission to audit cannot officially be granted until the number of students registered for credit is known, students will not be allowed to register for audit until after the classes close for registration for credit.

A Course Audit form must be signed by both the instructor of the course and either the Chair or Graduate Coordinator of the student's home department, and then be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) for approval and processing. Consult the Academic Schedule of the university's Calendar for the exact dates to register for audit.

Students who wish to change a course from credit to audit must first consult their supervisor or program advisor, and then complete a Course Audit form. Consult the Academic Schedule, Dates, and Deadlines in the Calendar for the exact dates to register for audit, and to change from credit to audit.

Audited courses will not be considered as meeting prerequisite, admission, or course requirements for any University of Alberta degree or diploma program. Transfer credit will not be granted for audited courses.

Audits Extra to the Degree

Students who wish to audit courses that are not an integral part of their program must complete a Course Audit form and indicate that the course is extra to the degree. The form must be signed by both the instructor of the course and either the Chair or Graduate Coordinator of the student's home department, and then submitted to GPS for approval and processing. Consult the Academic Schedule, Dates, and Deadlines in the Calendar for the exact dates to register for audit.
