Undergraduate Programs

WHY STUDY ECONOMICS?

Economics is a challenging discipline, with a rigorous program of study. Economists are in demand in many environments, and economics training is highly valued in many industries.

The undergraduate program in the Department of Economics provides students with a well-balanced liberal arts education. We offer two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) with two possible routes, as well as two Certificate programs that offer Economics students access to a structured program in the study of Finance or the Economics and Management of Natural Resources, Energy, and the Environment.

Our programs focus on the development of quantitative, qualitative, and analytical skills, which provides excellent preparation for further study in professional programs. Information about Economics degree programs and requirements can be found in the University of Alberta Calendar. Please visit the University of Alberta Admissions website for more information on application and admission.

Core courses in Economics develop microeconomic theory (the study of individual markets), macroeconomic theory (the study of the aggregate economy), and mathematical and statistical techniques for economic analysis. A variety of field courses apply and extend these theories and methods, analyzing labour markets, international trade and finance, money and banking, public finance, economic growth and development, the environment, energy and resources, industrial organization (the examination of different market structures), and more.
