Awards and Scholarships

The University of Alberta's Student Awards Office awards over $25 million in academic scholarships and financial awards to students each year, including several entrance awards to high school graduates who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.

Chemistry-Specific Awards

Thanks to generous individual donors and our partners in industry, the Registrar's Office awards numerous scholarships each year. Students must apply for these awards. A smaller number of awards and prizes are administered at the department level, where eligible students are automatically considered or, if an application is required, contacted to apply (see below). 

Physical Chemistry Book Prize: Awarded for outstanding achievement to a student taking both CHEM 371 and CHEM 373 in the same academic year. ($100 Bookstore gift card).
American Chemical Society Analytical Chemistry Award: Awarded for outstanding achievement in analytical chemistry, for students entering fourth year. (1-year ACS student membership)
The CHEM 282 Award: Awarded to the student achieving the highest overall grade in CHEM 282: Atomic and Molecular Structure. ($500)
Dr R Norman & Magda Kemeny Jones Summer Studentship:  Used to supplement a summer salary for a third or fourth year student or students employed in a chemistry laboratory at the University of Alberta. Preference will be given to a student working in analytical chemistry or in an area that uses spectroscopy or mathematical analysis of instrumental output. ($1500).

Lloyd and Margaret Cooley Memorial Studentship in Analytical Chemistry: Awarded annually to female students with satisfactory academic standing, who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, enrolled in the second, third, or fourth year of a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, employed in a laboratory at the University of Alberta, and researching any analytical chemistry problem. Two recipients will be selected each year on the basis of academic standing ($2000 per award + $500 scholarship for continuing students).

Royal Society of Chemistry Certificate of Undergraduate Excellence. Awarded to up to two graduating chemistry students (Honors, Specialization, or Chemistry Major) for their achievement in undergraduate chemistry research as judged by their curriculum vitae, supervisor(s) evaluation(s), and performance in Chemistry 401 and 403. Recipients must have completed CHEM 401 and CHEM 403, but performance in all undergraduate research courses (CHEM 299, 399, 401, 403), experience (summer placements, internships), and achievements (papers, presentations) will be considered. (Certificate + book or RSC affiliate membership)
