Faculty of Science Summer Camps


Are you stoked about science? Get ready - science summer camps are back!

The Faculty of Science has partnered with content experts in the Department of Computing Science, the Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET), the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), the Department of Biological Sciences and the University of Alberta Dino Lab to bring you another jam-packed summer full of exciting opportunities for learning and discovery.

We are home to some of the best scientific minds and materials on the planet, so campers will be learning from leading scientists and researchers, with access to world-class research labs, museums, and specimens.

Jr. Space Explorers

The Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET) invites kids ages 7-9 into this immersive program where they will be introduced to the exciting field of space science. Junior space scientists can learn more about space exploration and astronomy, and continue in the advanced level camps next summer. A great way to launch!

Designing with Computers

A girls-only camp! Explore technology using computers to design, create and animate. Learn how to design animated movies and create interactive stories and games. Have fun solving puzzles and experience the diverse world of computing.

SciKids *NEW*

Calling all future scientists! Each day you will explore different science topics and learn how science shapes the world around us. Campers will participate in cool experiments, visit labs and museums, and interact with real scientists. Space Explorers

In partnership with the Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET), explore space science concepts through activities in astronomy and telescopes, hands-on rocketry, meteorites and impacts, galaxy formation, space weather, astronaut safety, spacecraft flight, robotics, and space program teamwork coordination.

Build your own fossils, learn about fossil preservation and excavation, and visit the Faculty of Science’s exclusive fossil collections.

Computing Science Introduction


Interested in animation or creating graphics, games and movies? You can do it all with the wide variety of activities in this camp. Learn how to make animated movies and interactive games on the computer that you can share with others. Discover the world of web design and see robots in action. Make some new friends and get a taste of the diverse world of computing!

Program a robot and learn how to control your robot's sense of touch, vision, movement and hearing. Teams will work together to accomplish challenges that will test their use of logic and creativity.

Space Challengers

Get up close with meteorites from the University's collection, build interactive robots, simulate working at mission control, and design and launch your own model rockets. In partnership with the Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET), Space Challengers will receive an engaging and authentic high-tech experience in space science through opportunities in hands-on exploration, discovery, and critical thinking.

Game Design Workshop

Game Design

Interested in designing interactive computer games? Then this is the camp for you! You will design and create interactive stories on the computer using ScriptEase II. This student-friendly language allows those with limited or no programming experience to create games that can be played as adventures in the Neverwinter Nights game system.

New for 2015: Half day camps

This year the Faculty of Science is excited to offer half-day science camps. Half day camps will be offered with special pricing, and allow flexibility for registrants.

The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation also offers half-day camps that pair well with our schedule. Please see their website at summercamps.ualberta.ca to view their 2015 half-day camp offerings. If your child is attending a Physical Education and Recreation camp for half of the day and a Science camp for the other half, we will work together to ensure your camper safely makes his/her way from one camp to the next throughout the week.

Grapple with technological challenges while learning computing fundamentals through problem solving activities, animation, video game creation and programming basics.
