Looking beyond stereotypes (Edmonton Examiner)
A student project out of the University of Alberta is hoping to break down gender stereotypes. “I think gender is kind of prescribed to you when you’re still in the womb,” said U of A student Madeline Askwith, a group member in the project called I Am More than My Gender. Students began going around the U of A’s campus, and took photos of people holding up signs stating the ways in which they do not conform to gender stereotypes. All told, Askwith estimates that the group has collected around 50 submissions (mostly from university students), and hopes that people will continue to send in their anecdotes.
